Have you always wanted to Be A Sports Mental Coach? Now you can.

Peak Performance Sports Offers “Mental Game Coaching” Certification

Dr. Patrick Cohn, a national expert in “mental game” coaching and sports psychology, is now offering golf teachers, psychologists, and sport psychologists in training a one-of-a-kind program that will allow them to become “certified” as mental game coaches.

Under the Mental Game Coaching Professional (MGCP) program, qualifying participants take part in a 20-week tele-course. Participants learn how to help athletes build confidence, enhance their focusing skills, improve teamwork, build communication skills and maximize performance. The course material is based on Dr. Cohn’s 12 years’ experience teaching athletes how to build confidence and “get in the zone.”

“The MGCP certification program teaches participants the skills and techniques needed to empower teams or individual athletes at any level, including, junior, high school, college, or professional players,” says Dr. Cohn, who earned a Ph.D. in Education specializing in sport psychology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Cohn has been a mental game coach to amateur and professional golfers for over 12 years, and some of his clients include Brian Watts, J.L. Lewis, Glen Hnatiuk, and Tom Gillis.

There isn’t any programs like this available, he notes. “The other option is to go through a formal education program in sports psychology or clinical psychology.” During the 20-week program, participants get hands-on experience dealing with real-life challenges. For example, one of the MGCP participants is now working with two high school basketball players. He’ll help them identify the circumstances under which they lack or lose confidence, and will give them tips for boosting their confidence and improving their overall game.

"Confidence issues are the biggest hurdle to improving an athlete's performance,” says Dr. Cohn. After athletes work with Dr. Cohn, they are better able to fend off doubt and boost their confidence. MGCP participants will learn Dr. Cohn's techniques for instilling confidence in players.

Participants who complete the program will receive an MGCP certificate, will use the MGCP title and insignia, and will be listed on peaksports.com as a certified MGCP. Dr. Cohn noted that he launched the program in part because he receives many inquiries about where to find “mental game” coaches in different parts of the country.

In order to qualify for the program, participants must have 10 years or more experience as a competitive athlete, coach or trainer; or a Ph.D. in psychology of Master’s in counseling psychology. They must have access to a team or individual athletes who they can train during the program.
